Das Wetter ist neulich sehr kalt gewesen und es hat Bodenfrost gegeben. Natürlich sind solche Wetterbedingungen für die Vögel sehr hart. Hinter dem Haus habe ich Futter ausgelegt: Sonnenblumenkerne, Körner und eine überreife Birne. Das schien bei dieser Amsel gut anzukommen!

The weather has been very cold recently and there has been ground frost. Of course, such conditions are hard for the birds. I put out food behind the house: sunflower seeds, grains and an overripe pear. That seemed to be appreciated by this Blackbird!

In der nähe des Hauses habe ich einen Großen Brachvogel bei der Suche nach Würmern beobachtet. Sobald der Boden wieder auftaut, können Große Brachvögel Würmer mit ihren langen Schnäbeln fangen, die beim kalten Wetter relativ tief in die Erde bohren.

Close by the house, I observed a Curlew searching for worms. As soon as the ground thaws, the Curlews can catch worms which burrow relatively deeply due to the cold weather with their long bills.

Tragischerweise gilt der Große Brachvogel jetzt als potentiell gefährdet. Im Vereinigten Königreich ist zwischen 1994 und 2010 die Population dieser Art schockierenderweise um 46% gesunken. Die Organisation „British Trust for Ornithology“  versucht herauszufinden, warum diese wunderschöne Vogelart verwschindet. Sicherlich kann ich und will ich die Moore, die Landschaften Shetlands ohne die stimmungsvolle Rufe des Großen Brachvogels nicht vorstellen. Link: BTO Curlew Appeal

Tragically, the Curlew is now regarded as potentially threatened. In the UK the population of this species fell by a shocking 46% between 1994 and 2010. The BTO are trying to find out why this beautiful bird is disappearing. I certainly cannot and do not wish to imagine the moorlands and the landscapes of Shetland without the atmospheric cries of the Curlew. Link: BTO Curlew Appeal

Die Amsel ist auf einem Dach gesessen und hat mit ihrem melancholischen Gesang angefangen: / The Blackbird sat upon a roof and began to sing wistfully:

Aber das hat dem männlichen Haussperling, der seine Nisthöhle unten in der Steinmauer hat, offensichtlich nicht gefallen, und er hat laut protestiert: / But the male House Sparrow, which has his nest hole in the stone wall below, was evidently rather annoyed about this and protested loudly:

Die Amsel hat versucht, den Haussperling zu ignorieren, und hat weitergesungen: / The Blackbird tried to ignore the House Sparrow and carried on singing:

Aber der Haussperling hat nicht aufgegeben zu zwitschern, und die Amsel ist weggeflogen, wohl um einen Platz zu finden, wo sie ungestört singen konnte! / But the House Sparrow didn’t stop chirping and the Blackbird flew away, probably to find a place where it could sing without being interrupted!
