Junge Haussperlinge

Die jungen Haussperlinge sind flügge geworden. / The young House Sparrows have fledged.

The appearance of a new generation of House Sparrows reminded me of this excerpt from Thomas Hardy’s beautiful poem, „Proud Songsters“ (1927):

„These are brand new birds of twelve months‘ growing,
Which a year ago, or less than twain,
No finches were, nor nightingales,
Nor thrushes,
But only particles of grain,
And earth, and air, and rain.“
